-Rhianna, Miss Teenage Bay St.George 2017
I grew up in a small community on the west coast of Newfoundland, I live in a small area called McKay’s which is apart of the Heatherton- Highlands (AKA the Three Rivers) area. In our little corner of Newfoundland we were blessed with some amazing scenery, including my favorite; Robinson’s Head.
Standing on top of Robinson’s Head over looking the Bay of St.George there is a feeling you get, a feeling of freedom and peace. Never in my life time have I’ve not been up there and not get that feeling. It’s one of those places that as soon as you look out over the ocean and into the sky you can feel and visibly see yourself relax.
Besides the amazing feeling I think the next best thing is the cows! That’s right cows. If you ever visit Robinson’s Head you just might find yourself face to face with a cow, and who knows you might just leave with a new best friend! But on a side note don’t try to pet them, there not always the friendliest. (However, if cows are something you enjoy this is a fishing/farming area and I can point you in the direction of many more mooey creatures!)
It wasn’t only until recently that I have gotten to experience the beauty of Robinson’s Head, but my fascination for it had started at a young age. I can still remember the day when I had first noticed it and had asked mom if we could go for a walk up there now keep in mind I was about 6 at the time and we were in the middle of winter, asking if we could go up there almost every time I saw it. It wasn’t until I was 13 years old and myself and my friend decided to go up there and take a look around. I can still remember getting off the ATV and having my breath taken away from such an amazing view.
The heart shape pond, a fascinating and beautiful creation by nature itself. Standing on Robinson’s Head with your back to the bay you will find yourself looking upon the heart shape pond. You will also find yourself looking upon the back of Cartyville. These sights are a true treat.
At 9:30 on a warm summers night Robinson’s Head is the place to be, with a glowing sunset that warms you up inside and the calming sound of the waves – there is nothing else that you could possibly need in that moment. I’ve always loved sunsets and getting to experience one on top of Robinson’s Head was truly amazing and I wouldn’t trade that moment for anything else in the world. It truly is a hidden treasure.
So if you ever find yourself in the Heatherton-Highlands area I highly recommend visiting this amazing spot, you won’t be disappointed. But don’t worry if you can’t get there during your first visit, our small area is loaded with beautiful places. Some of which will include- Shipcove in the Highlands where you can see naturally formed Sea Stack rock formations, bustling fishing ports at Crabbes Beach and Fischells, along with 3 salmon rivers and loads of ATV trails for the outdoor enthusiast.
From the majestic, breathtaking scenery to the smell of the wood and salt water at an evening bonfire, along with some of the greatest hospitality and friendliest people anywhere in the world…I can promise you that you will want to return to our little piece of heaven on Earth time and time again.
Come for a visit, stay for awhile…I will be happy to show you around!
So until my next blog post!
Rhianna- Miss Teenage Bay St.George 2017
Recently I have been getting the same question a lot and it is “What is your platform?” Well, to answer that question, my platform is self confidence and self esteem in youth. This is a topic that really hits home for me, and it is something that I have very strong feelings about. I have decided to tell you the story behind how and why I chose my platform.
As a person who has had and still has a lack of self confidence and some self esteem issues,I know how tough it can be, it is not all that meets the eye. What we show people is totally different from who we really are. From the outside some of us may be quiet, shy, a bit anti-social to a whole range of different things, but on the inside it is not who we are at all. I was always known as the shy, quiet one because that is all I would show anyone but, if you were to ask my parents about what I was like at home you would never say that it was the same person. I was always scared of what people might think or what they might say…I hid who I really was behind a mask of being shy and quiet in hopes that people would accept me.
A couple of years ago when I was 13 it got really bad and I really got down on myself. I didn’t want to hang out with my friends because I kept telling myself that I was annoying them and they probably were not going to like me anymore. I didn’t want to go to any social events because of what people might think or say. I told myself that I wasn’t good enough for my family, that I needed to do better to make them proud but then my thoughts would turn into “you can’t make them proud because you can’t do anything right”. It got to the point where my mom and I had talked about taking me to see a therapist.
It was honestly horrible not having the confidence to wear what you want, to say what you want, and to do what you want and to have low self esteem and think that your not good enough for anyone. Not to mention the endless breakdowns and random crying, to the excuses made up that you couldn’t hangout because you were busy but, in reality you just thought they hated you and that you annoyed them, and having to leave class to go to the washroom and stop yourself from crying all because you wanted to answer the question the teacher asked but you were afraid to get it wrong so you kept your mouth shut.
That is the side of me that I never let any one see, the one that I tried to hide so bad. A lack of self confidence and self esteem is something I would never wish upon anyone. It’s not only until recently that I have tried to break away from all of it and it feels amazing to have gained some self confidence and self esteem back, although I’m not fully where I want to be yet, I’ve never been happier with myself.
I truly believe that had I not joined youth darts in our local community that I would not be where I am today. Having to stand on my own two feet and know that I may be judged by my peers had to be one of the hardest things that I have ever done…It was definitely one of the best things I have ever done! It would be wrong if I failed to acknowledge some people who have helped me get to this point…my parents without a doubt, my brother Mason, my entire family and last but not least my youth dart coaches Morley and Edna Greening. Without these two individuals and the commitment they have made to the youth in our community I feel that I may still be stuck where I was 2 years ago.
If I can help youth who are going through what I have gone through and get them to a place where they are happy with themselves, that would be a greatest accomplishment that I could ever achieve.
So until my next blog post! Keep your head up and believe in yourself!

My grade 10 year has definitely been an exciting and emotional one, from attending the national youth dart championships to winning the title of Miss Teenage Bay St.George, it really has been amazing. I wouldn’t have been able to get where I am today without all of the love and support from my community, my parents & family and my teachers.

-Rhianna, Miss Teenage Bay St.George
Hello!! My name is Rhianna, you probably already knew that from the title though. Wow, I can’t believe that in just 61 days I’m going be in Toronto to compete for the title of Miss Teenage Canada! I cannot wait to bring you along with me on my journey and to share with you my time as Miss Teenage Bay St.George 2017.
So I’m guessing most of you are wondering who I am? I mean I could lie and tell you that I am a interesting person or I could tell you the truth. So to answer your question “Who I am?”… I don’t really know. Growing up I always had a lack of self confidence, which caused me to keep to myself a lot and become a very shy and quiet person, in hopes that I could get people to like me I tried to be like the other kids at my school but, in reality it wasn’t who I was at all. Growing up in a small community really didn’t help a lot either, it always made me feel like someone was watching or was going say something to me. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I decided that it wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted to be an outgoing, adventurous, confident person, and so far I have made huge progress in becoming that person. So I can’t really answer the question “who I am” because for me I’m just figuring that out.
Now that you know “who I am” lets get onto the fun stuff! There is one thing about me that almost all of the time people stop to think about…Darts! I play darts, people always think its kind of funny that I like darts when I tell them. But yes, I love darts! Darts is my get away from the world whether its playing for fun or playing competitively against others. Currently I am apart of team Newfoundland and Labrador 2017 for youth darts! This was my second trip to the national competition and I’m looking forward to representing my province again in the future (hopefully!). Other then that I don’t really have a whole lot of other hobbies besides; reading, running, playing volleyball and of course napping! Oh and I can’t forget listening to my favorite band AC/DC!!
Can we all just take a couple of minutes or hours (most likely hours for me!) to take a look at the sweet face of my baby cousin (AKA) my godson, baby Nixon. It is definitely safe to say that this baby boy has stolen my heart! Well we’re on the topic of family I want to take a minute to thank my family for all the support they have given me over the past 15 years of my life, if it was not for them I wouldn’t be here writing this blog right now, so thank you to my parents and my two amazing brothers, I love you guys! And cant forget my little fur balls Abby,Jack and Ally. I just want to take a moment to say I bought my cat, Ally, a harness with a bell, worst decision I have ever made!lol
Thank you for all of your continued support, I am so grateful for everything. I can not express my gratitude enough. So until my next blog post!
